The Shantawene coffee mill is found within the small village of the Shantawene and serves around 1500 local growers. It is located in the foothills of the Bombe Mountains and thus higher than many of the mills in the region, pulling from slower-ripening coffee trees (due to high altitude and cooler weather). The soil in the area is very nutrient-dense, and groves of inset (faux banana) intermingle with the coffee trees. This washing station is the result of several years of preparation for Sidama coffee man Assefa Dukamo and his family.

Cupping Notes: Malt dry aroma becoming more intense as a wet aroma. Flavor is orange-berry like and very citrusy, becoming very sweet and clean tasting as the cup cools. Pleasant lingering aftertaste.

Before You Order

Questions

Orders are typically shipped the same day they are roasted. So, it comes down to how fast the Post Office is. They advertise “from 1-5 business days depending on which state you’re located in.” You’ll receive tracking information via email so you can track the package’s progress.

It’s best not to grind the beans until you’re ready to use them, so grind just before you brew. Match the grind to your brewer: coarse for French press, Medium for most drip brewers. For pour overs: Medium to coarse, whichever gives you a four minute brew time (in general). Fine to very fine for espresso depending on your equipment.

Keep it in the bag it came in and put a rubber band around it. Glass containers are not great as the idea is to minimize the air (oxygen) around the beans. Unless completely full, glass containers have too much head room. If storing for up to several months, freezing is a good idea as long as the beans are completely sealed (like in the bags they come in). Studies have shown time and again that freezing, if done right, is a good option.

Currently, subscriptions are limited to a mix of single origin varietals and blends. A single coffee type for the length of the subscription is not an option. You can see how it works on the Coffee Club page.

Yes, you can pick it up at Lost Dutchman Coffee House located at 12 N Center Street in Mesa. Simply select “will pick up” during checkout. We’ll send you a text (or email if you don’t receive texts) when your order is physically at the location. You’ll receive an email notification once the order is “Processed” in our system. This does not mean it is at the pick up location yet. Wait until you receive notification that says, “your order is ready for pick up”.
