Coffee News

New single origin coffees are in!

Ethiopia Misty Valley and also from Ethiopia, Shantawene are  both now available. They are both new crop and exude berry-like jam flavors.  As soon as Valic gets around to it, we have another new coffee from Costa Rica; one of our favorite coffee growing regions.

8/5/23 – New coffee –

One of the brightest and tastiest of Guatemalan coffees is back – La Voz is from the Atitlan growing region of Guatemala.  Loaded with a combination of citrus and milk chocolate, this is a great morning eye-opener.

6/21/23 Happy Summer. Finally….

The Tanzanian Igale coffee we’ve been waiting for has arrived and is now available for purchase.  This is a limited edition coffee and we don’t have a very large quantity of it.  Read the description of the coffee and check out the image of the pulping machine used to process the coffee cherries and you’ll see why.  The producers do a remarkable job with their small equipment as the raw beans  we received are clean, green, and  contain the perfect moisture content for us to roast them. We are happy to support them and their goals of producing what is truly specialty grade coffee.   On a side note, we’re expecting a procession of some other really nice coffees over the next several months until Fall.  These include mostly Ethiopian and Central American coffees.

Tips for Better Coffee Brewing

Tips for Better Coffee Brewing

Coffee beans go through a long journey from seed to cup. Any misstep along the way can ruin the end result. This applies to how the coffee is brewed. After all the care the farmer puts into cultivating his crop, throughout the drying and milling process, transporting the coffee, storing it in a warehouse, and finally roasting and shipping it, if it is brewed improperly even the best of beans can taste like watery drek. Here are some sturdy tips to help you avoid making potentially disastrous brewing mistakes.

This is a basic description of how espresso is properly made using a traditional espresso machine that uses high pressure pump to force water through a portafilter for proper extraction. Note that one cannot come close to achieving genuine espresso using a $50 machine that relies on steam pressure to force water through the coffee grinds.

The history of coffee is filled with pronouncements regarding its effects on coffee drinkers – ranging from coffee’s divine quality to energize a mundane life, to be alternatively matched with edicts banning the evil brew as sinful and deadly to one’s health. [continue reading]

The French Press is thought to have been invented somewhere in France during the mid 1800’s, but the name of the person is not known for sure. It was first patented in 1931 by a fellow named Attilio Calimani (that name does not sound French). [continue reading]

About Us

About UsThe Lost Dutchman Coffee Company started out in 1999. We opened with the idea of sourcing great coffee beans from all coffee growing regions and making them readily available to coffee connoisseurs at a reasonable cost. We started out selling green, unroasted coffee beans only. One thing led to another and soon we purchased our own commercial-grade roaster and started roasting our own beans while learning from experience as well as from some of the best roasters in the business. Coffee roasting is a never-ending learning experience and over the years, we’ve continued to grow our knowledge of the bean and hone our skills to the point where we are very confident that we can provide a top-notch product to our customers.

Our coffee is roasted in a micro-roastery located in Tempe, Arizona. We currently have two traditional drum roasters, an Ambex and a Probat, with a third roaster to be added soon. The flexible roaster controls using state of the art profiling technology help create splendid, consistent, repeatable roasts.

Q. What sparked your interest in coffee?

Back in the late 90’s a work colleague brought in some beans he had home roasted and brewed some up for me to try out. I had no idea such contraptions as home coffee roasters existed. The beans were covered in oil, but they still tasted light-years better than the office-coffee swill I was drinking at the time. I ordered my own Hearthware Coffee Bean Roaster the same day; a very primitive home air roaster by today’s standards. The rest is history.

Q. Have you always been in the coffee industry?

No, I have not. I’ve worn numerous hats over the years ranging from car mechanic, pilot, engineer in the semiconductor industry, and entrepreneur of sorts. They’ve all been interesting, but working in coffee has been the most enjoyable. What makes it so is the combination of the people working the entire supply chain and the incredibly complexity of coffee. Coffee is one of those things, to be cliche, “the more I learn about it, the more I learn that I don’t know much at all about it”.
